Turon

Prospective for Au

Project Overview

The Turon Project covers 120km² and is 60km northeast of Newcrest Mining’s Cadia Valley Mine in the Central Tableland region, NSW.

Krakatoa was granted the Turon Project in the East Lachlan Fold Belt, NSW in February 2020. Both Alkane Resources Limited and Freeport McMoran Exploration Australia Pty Ltd have pegged large landholdings near Turon.

The Turon area has been the site of significant alluvial and hard rock gold production, dominantly in the 19th Century.  The area contains four main groups of historical mineral occurrences. These being the Quartz Ridge group, Turondale Group, Millah Murrah group and the Dam Creek group.

The major gold domains are located in the two separate dominant north-trending reef systems of the Quartz Ridge and Turondale Groups; comprising numerous workings and quartz reefs that strike over 1.4km and 2.4km respectively.

Rock grab sampling across the Quartz Ridge and Turondale Groups returned several tantalising results, including:

  • 1,530 g/t Au – Dead Horse Reef
  • 150 g/t Au – Dead Horse Reef
  • 60.6 g/t Au – Britannia Mine
  • 26 g/t Au – Dead Horse Reef
  • 17.15 g/t Au – Sixty Seven Reef
  • 11.3 g/t Au – Quartz Ridge Reef

Limited drilling and lack of modern systematic exploration has inadequately tested the known historical mineral occurrences and surrounding prospective areas within the license.

The Turon Project is prospective for high-grade “Slate Belt” orogenic gold similar to the Hill End Field which has produced ~2Moz Au and where the world’s largest gold specimen, the Holtermann Nugget, was found. It also contains areas suitable for shear-hosted gold mineralisation, alluvial gold terraces and structurally controlled high sulphide base metal (+/- gold) hydrothermal metamorphic vein mineralisation.
